Leading a user-centred design team I worked on the alpha of a new Defra service for local authorities, linked to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. I worked collaboratively with User Centred Design colleagues, product, tech teams and stakeholders to understand data requirements, dependencies and user needs.
The project faced multiple challenges, as government policy, project scope and outside dependencies were continually changing. I advocated for content design based on user research, as opposed to stakeholder needs. As well as following the GOV.UK service manual and GDS guidelines, I put processes in place to ensure consistency, sharing best practices across UCD teams, setting up content crits, pair writing with stakeholders and supporting junior team members. And I introduced ways to document content decisions in Confluence so stakeholders could understand the rationale behind them. This was used as a source of truth for content for developers, in conjunction with prototypes in Figma for design, and was referenced for auditing purposes for GDS assessment.
My team passed GDS alpha assessment without conditions, which is not common for Defra services.
